Article: Monkey Shines

This article was about how to take a great portrait, no matter what your subject's species is. It described certain tips to make a great portrait no matter what species you are taking pictures of. The first tip was that if you watch baby gorillas they act the same and even make some of the same gestures as children do. The following tip was to hide the handler. Animals don't always pose the way we want them to, so it can often be difficult to photograph them. One solution to this is to have the handler hold the subject, and drape a cloth over the animals arms. These fabrics can add visual interest to the photo but it may depend on the color or texture of the fabric.
The next step is to say the magic word. Since interacting with the subject may be the hardest part you can say their names to get their attention or say something that they might find funny, this may include sounds or words. The last tip is to work efficiently. Animals and children cannot sit still for very long so it is important to have the lighting ane exposure ready to go. Then you should make sure that they are comfortable befor starting. However, you shouldn't spend forever trying to do this, be willing to come back and try again because the first try may not be a success. To sum this all up you should be ready, be quick, and be patient.

Article: White Balancing Act

This article is about not knowing about WB images and how it can ruin your images. Learning the manual controls and all the other controls on the camera is the key step to having successful photos. Digital cameras offer White Balance presets for certain conditions. Accuracy of color is not as critical as in nature photography but it may be in other commercial work. Since color temperature will range from day to day these differences will produce casts in light that don't match the preset on the camera.

Then it went on to describe some tips for nature shots. The first tip was to avoid auto white balance. Color can be used effectively to create a certain mood in the photo. Setting your camera to WB can eliminate some of these effects resulting in a successful image. Its always best to set the camera to Wb individually for every scene. The second tip is to shoot RAW and adjust the WB later. Capturing the images in RAW mode other than JPEG. This has the added advantage of letting you choose a WB setting while being able to process the images at home.

The third tip was to use histograms for the best detail. Most digital cameras use separate red, green and blue filters and they determine the color and the quality of the image. The filters also make up some of how detailed the image may look. Each of these filters or sensors has a limited range of values. The WB setting determines the way readings from these channels are blended. And the last tip was to blend multiple WB settings. White Balance affects the whole image so that is why you can blend separate versions of the same image that are converted from RAW using different White Balance settings.

Photo Critique/Fix

In the original photo the sky is too light and the contrast isn't from dark to light, the whole sky is kind of all light colored. The landscape is not sharp at all and it doesn't stand out at all. Its very light and the reflection of it in the water is very light and needed to be darker. Also the texture isn't very noticeable in the original photo that im going to edit.

When I fixed these problems, this is the result that I got:

5 B/W Non-Portrait Photos

I like this photo because the lighting of the sky and below the sky. The white part of the mountains in the background is interesting. Also I like that it has rare lighting. There is also texture that is revealed in the bottom which appears to be water. I like that around the stream there are cracks which reaveal texture.

This is a great photo because the backlight is really visible. Also the backlight is reflected over the mountains and the stream. The interesting colors that are mixed in the stream make it a good photo. The mountains in the background make it a good photo. The skys different contrasted colors also make this photo a good photo.

5 B/W Non-Portrait Photos

I like this photo because the sky
is all different shades of black and gray because a storm is coming through. Also it is a leading line photo and the water on the road looks really good. The lighting that is shining from underneath the clouds is also an interesting aspect of this photo.
I think what makes this a good photo is that it is reflected in a shallow channel. Also the lighting from beneath the clouds is great contrast from black to gray to white. Also the cracks that are on the side of the road kind of make it have a pattern which is good.

5 B/W Non-Portrait Photos

I like this photo because the sand dunes have layers to them and it makes the photo look really good. Since the layers are so visible they are almost the part of the picture that stands out the most. The sky has swirls in it and the clouds are really different looking. This makes the capture of the picture look amazing.

This is a great photo because it captures the texture of the sand dunes. Also because the sky is very active and the clouds look like they are swirling. The brightness of the sky makes the picture better in the sense that it calls attention to it. Also the darkness and lightness in the sand dunes makes this a good picture because they overlap. The contrasts in this photo are amazing.

5 B/W Non-Portrait Photos

I like this photo because the ground looks like it has been cracked in a whole bunch of places and it makes the picture have a great composition. What I also like about this photo is that the sky kind of makes it look like there is something special going on in this picture. Also this photo has layers that are visible by the clouds.

This photo is a good photo because of the sky being the perspective and the contrast of the ground. It has amazing backlight through the layered clouds. The brightness makes it look like there is something different in this photo and it makes it different than other photos.

I like this photo because it looks like there is fog in the background and it makes it look like a great picture. Also the trees in the line look good as well. What makes this a great picture is that the trees are in a line so it can be considered a leading line photo. Also the fencing leads down the line just like the trees do.

Ansel Adams Post

I like this photo because of the perspective that it is taken at. It is a excellent leading line photo. I also like that it is centered. I think that it is a great black and white photo because of the perspective of it and that it leads into the horizon.
